Dan Flavin

Dan Flavin’s light objects are comprised of the reduced color and form vocabulary of industrially manufactured fluorescent lights. Limited to standard colors and lengths, the American exponent of minimalist art assembles his material into regular elementary forms. Flavin has rejected attempts to categorize his light objects in terms of sculpture, painting, drawing or spatial drawing. Preferring to refer to them as “situations“ or “proposals“, Flavin essentially calls attention to the role of a subjective beholder. He was aware of the fact that the light in the room also details the beholders, coloring their skin in warm or cold hues. Just as the room is made visible by the light and the emptiness is turned to a color space, so too are the beholders themselves made visible.

Born in Jamaica (USA) in 1933. Died in 1996 in Riverhead (USA).
